Let's chat about my reflection

Hi everyone!

This is my reflection on my project!

My name is Andrea Hernandez and for my foundation portfolio project, I created a magazine. Ever since the project was introduced to me there was no doubt in my mind I would focus the magazine on women’s fashion & lifestyle. I knew the genre was one in which I could use a passion of mine to complete this project. I decided I didn’t want to follow the normal conventions but still got inspired by well-known magazines that have established some of these conventions. VOGUE was my main source of inspiration, and when picking the style of my cover I realized I didn’t want to follow the cookie cutter cover.

Instead, I took a picture of my 23-year-old sister wearing a springtime outfit, and instead of a plain color backdrop, I included an eye-catching wall we found around the Miami Design district which relates to my main article. Although I wanted to challenge the conventions, I wanted the title to follow the normal conventions by mirroring VOGUE’s. I decided to mix a thin and elegant font with my title to create the same illusion of VOGUE. Yet, I positioned to the side my cover lines, used bright colors and a mixture of fonts throughout.

As you can see the colors, I used were colors from the backdrop of the image, tying in all of them making the cover aesthetically pleasing, and cohesive. I aimed for the pages to be less chaotic, used the same fonts throughout all the pages, but brought in colors as it was a springtime issue. I chose to follow this convention because my magazine is intended for women from 18 years of age to 30. I desire them to flip through the pages and feel that what they are reading is written by a knowledgeable writer and the format and fonts of the magazine plays a big role in conveying that feeling. Which is why I decided for my format to be sleek, easy to read with clean black font.
When I first began my project, I was convinced I would dedicate my article on spring trends and only spring trends. I simply wanted to do a fashion article. As I moved forward with some research I realized that although the issue is focused during springtime, the main article I was writing did not need to be on that just with clothing. Instead, I focused on the lifestyle part and wrote about the trendy places to visit in Miami. I learned from doing this project, It would take time and research to feel proud of my results. I also learned that even if I believed I was doing some things correctly there was always room for improvement. As I talked about in some of my blog posts, I used the Joomag website that my teacher had recommended. After getting the hang of the website, my work deleted, and I had to start from scratch. After fighting with my computer for days, I realized that Canva was the best choice for me since it is an app I know back and forth and am constantly using to create new things. The only thing I didn’t enjoy about Canva is that they can see the two-page layout side by side, instead, you must scroll up and down to see the pages. Regardless during this project, I truly could challenge my creativity and could use everything within Canva to make my project perfect in my eyes.

Due to my selected target audience, I would like my magazine to be distributed online specifically in apps such as Snapchat, in which people already see magazines such as cosmopolitan and Seventeen magazine. Technology is a huge part of our day to day, therefore I find it tremendously beneficial for magazines to be at the click of a button. I would also like my magazine to be printed and sold in places like local grocery stores, to high-end stores.

Throughout my project, I used a variety of technologies throughout the making of my project. I used my sister's professional camera to capture the picture from the front cover. I knew that even if my I phone had the great resolution, the lighting settings are just not the same. I wanted to make sure that the cover was taken with a professional camera that had automatic settings for the lighting especially if the cover was outside. I intended to edit the cover photo to get it right and experimented with different filters for hours on my computer until the editing was perfect. For the rest of my pictures, that were included through my two-page spread were taken and edited with my I phone on the app Lightroom. Although it was my first time working with his app, I got the hang of it fast. I mainly experimented with the vibrancy and brightness. I mainly focused on that technique to make sure my pictures came out bright, and clean. It came out just the way I hoped for.

I am overjoyed with my final product. This project allowed me to express my creativity in so many different ways.

Let's chat shoes

Hi everyone!

I know some of you might be thinking why is she going to write a whole post about shoes, don't they fall in the accessory category? For me personally, shoes are essential to an outfit. After reading some articles I found so many trendy ones for the spring time so I thought why not make an entire post dedicated to them?  The article that truly summed them all up was a Cosmo article, that I will leave right here for you; https://www.cosmopolitan.com/style-beauty/fashion/g23322585/spring-shoe-trends-2019/. This article included dozens of shoe styles.

White with everything

These shoes are a staple for the springtime. White sneakers go with any type of outfit; dress, shorts, or pants. It's important to always have a comfy shoe that goes with any type of outfit, and one that is trending massively right now are from the brand SUPERGA. This Italian brand is perfect because these shoes are not only comfortable and durable. They have sneakers with all different types of patterns, lace colors, and platforms. But these classic ones are a definite easy go-to for the springtime.

Animal print

In my research, I came across the animal print. This trend was very big during the early 2000s and have reappeared in waves. Last winter they made a firm comeback and especially in shoes. Printed shoes are an amazing way to be able to wear this trend, but in a moderate way especially if it's not in your typical style. The two animal prints that are persistently put in shoes are snakeskin and cheetah/leopard skin. Although these shoes are chunky pumps the animal print constantly varies throughout different shoe styles.

Strappy leather sandals

A girly addition to my research! Strappy sandals make any outfit look girlier, and for the springtime. These shoes are always necessary since the weather is beginning to get warmer.

Chunky sneakers

Chunky sneakers! In my research, I realized how highly trendy these shoes are. Originally these shoes came from the FILA brand. The celebrities have been wearing the Balenciaga ones, but mainstream brand decided to imitate this style and put them at a lower price. These are the type of shoes that make your outfit, not complete it.

Let's chat about accessories

Hi everyone!

So today I have been thinking a lot about the accessories I want to make sure to include in the magazine. Accessories are SO important and can definitely make an outfit go from a 5 to a 10. After reading this article https://www.instyle.com/fashion/accessories/spring I was able to pick up on some trends that I had not picked up on yet and decided to share with you all which went the best with the outfits I am putting together.

Barrettes
This trend has got me thinking about how trends come and go and we don't even notice. I used to wear these clips when I was little and grew out of them before going into middle school because " they weren't cool anymore". Now they are one of the biggest trends and are being sold in stores for teenagers, and young women.

 Scarves

An accessory that I own a bunch of! This trend is going to be very easy to incorporate in the outifts I have in mind because I have so many already in my closet. The coolest thing about this accessory is that it's not limited to only wear it in your hair, instead, it could be paired around a bag or around the belt loop of pants. These scarves are so versatile since they are sold in so many different patterns.

Wooden/ basket bags

These are amazing! I was just able to purchase a similar one of these to incorporate it within one of the outifts I have in mind for the shoot! These scream springtime to me. I find it quite amazing how these are made by hand, and it just makes it that more special when wearing them. Not to mention they are definitely unique and add a laid back feel to any outfit.

Fun sunnies

Fun sunglasses made a comeback a while back, and they don't seem like they are going anywhere. Which is why I want to include them in some of the outfits! The best part about sunglasses is how inexpensive they can be. These are all from a trendy store ' Urban Outfitters' and they are just $10 bucks!

Let's chat about the plan for this week

Hi everyone!

Last week I told you guys about my dilemma with the photo shoot, and how I was going to show you all the outifts I will be putting together this week! But a little change of plans! I will not be sharing with you the actual outfits until the final pictures of the photo shoot come out. I really want it to be a surprise, and I thought it would be more meaningful and useful to share with you my inspiration for the results. For now, I will be talking to you all about the trends I picked up on from my research and giving you a "sneak peek" of the pieces I will be utilizing when putting together my final outfits this week. I decided to do research on 3 categories; accessories, shoes, and main outfit garments. I will make certain to talk about the items I will be using for my outifts within these categories.

Let's chat about schedule change & my models

Hi everyone!

So as I had planned out last week, I was supposed to take the pictures for my magazine this weekend! However, due to one of my models being sick we decided to reschedule this photoshoot for March 23! This was ideal, not only due to one of my models being sick but also because I have more time to gather more outfits, and buy some pieces so the shoot can come out even better! This is also to my advantage because I did feel that I did get very excited to make the photo shoot happen, and wasn't as organized as I should have been. So for this upcoming week, I will be working on putting the outfits together and sharing them with you all in a little more detail, both for the girls and the boys.

However today I really wanted to introduce to you, my models/best friends!
